Colbert UMC spotlights
Jack Scaffe and Melvin Johnson, AKA, "The Twins."
A number of people new to our church and our community
sometimes confuse them and think that they are the same
person. To all of us that have known Melvin and Jack for a
number of years can definitely tell that they are not twins.
They are similar in many ways: height, glasses, they both
have a great sense of humor, and they both work very hard
for God, their families, their church and community.
However, their talents and interests are very different.
JACK SCAFFE
Jack Scaffe has been a
lifelong member of Colbert UMC. He is known to be the "Jack
of all trades." He is the one everyone calls on if something
needs repair. Over the years he has helped maintain our
church building and grounds, going about doing many repairs
most of us don't even now about. He has spent multitudes of
hours painting, replacing, trimming, and maintaining many
areas inside and outside the church building. He has served
many areas of our church's ministries, Trustees'
Chairperson, Church Board Chair, Sunday School
Superintendent, Worship Song Leader (morning and evening),
long time member of the choir, active member of the men's
fellowship, and leading the aluminum can recycling drive.
Jack and Lois are very faithful to recycle cans for "cash"
and give the money to help fund our ministry to the Athens
Area Soup Kitchen. He is well known in the Colbert Community
as the former "Water Man". He is an environmental activist,
keeping our roads and other areas free of litter, as well as
recycling cardboard, newspapers, plastic, and glass. Colbert
is very blessed to have Jack as an interested and devout
citizen and employee. Recently, the city of Colbert
recognized Jack as the "Colbert Citizen of the Year". In his
"spare" time, Jack witnesses faithfully for the Lord and
proclaims Jesus as his Lord and Savior. He is a devoted and
faithful husband to his precious wife Lois, to his five
children, seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He is very proud of his family and loves them dearly.
Colbert UMC loves you, Jack, and we thank you for your
devotion and service you so freely give to God and our
Church Family.
MELVIN JOHNSON
Melvin and Ruth Johnson came to Colbert about eleven
years ago and immediately became active in our church
family. Melvin is a retired teacher and administrator. he
has numerous stories to tell of his education experience.
Melvin has served many offices and positions in church.
Among the positions are Lay Leader, Certified Lay Speaker,
Lay Delegate to North GA Annual Conference, Sunday School
Teacher, UMM President, dedicated member of many of our
church committees such as Finance and Pastor Parish
Relations, and he's our most cherished "Chief Cook". Melvin
has cooked breakfast for the UMM meetings, hamburgers,
hotdogs and catfish suppers for fundraisers. Of course,
Melvin has helpers when he cooks, but we depend on him to
get it all going and he always sees it through to the end.
Melvin also serves his community being an active member in
the Colbert Lions Club, Madison County Retired Educators,
Georgia Committee, Volunteer Tax Aid of the AARP,
legislative activist at all levels (county, state, and
federal). At our annual July 4th Celebration you will see
Melvin at the Lions Club Booth cooking and serving. he is a
devoted husband to his precious wife Ruth, a dedicated
father to his two children and a doting grandfather to his
five grandchildren. In his spare time, he cheers on those
Georgia Bulldogs. We love you and thank you Melvin for your
active participation in serving our Lord Jesus Christ.
